Charles “Charley” McCandless starts his business, Charles McCandless Tile, from his back yard in Orange, CA.

Charley was very much a part of the architectural history of Orange. He tiled many of storefronts, including Watson's drug store. He is most proud of tiling the fountain in the center of the Orange Plaza. It is still standing 90 years later (2024).

After WWII, McCandless Tile grew exponentially. Charley buys land and builds a larger shop at the new location 636 N. Poinsettia Street, Santa Ana, to accommodate the rapid expansion. Painting of all the work trucks

Charles McCandless Jr. "Chuck", Charley's oldest son, joined the family business. He started as a tile setter, journeyman and then an estimator. He went on to run the field office and eventually became the Vice President.
Garland Hedrick (right) was an estimator from the 60's-80's. Marshall was the warehouse manager.
Fred McCandless, Charley's youngest son, joined the company after graduating with a degree in Business . Fred managed field and office teams.
McCandless Tile was contracted to install all the tile at Disney World, Florida. Fun Fact: McCandless Tile was the ONLY subcontractor on site from the beginning of the project until completion. All others were fired at some point.
Under the supervision of Joe Martin, the 800,000 square foot installation went smoothly to completion.

Mike Choate - started working for McCandless Tile in 1973 as a finish tile setter. He worked his way up to become a foreman (1980) and an estimator (1983). Mike became part owner with Fred and Chuck.
Charley came into the office everyday. He never really retired.
Knott’s Berry Farm Fountain
McCandless tile has completed much of the tile work at Knott's Berry Farm, including the fountain near the merry-go-round.
After 32 years the office building gets a complete remodel, updating aesthetics and functionality.
Fred's son Mark (top left) joined the team after graduating with a degree from Long Beach State University. Mark started working as a helper then tile setter since he was 16. After graduating college, Mark was hired as an estimator and worked his way through the ranks to where he currently holds the title as President.
